This session advances the development of theory in design research. Design “theory” is in DTM’s name, but the degree to which we build theory, or reflect on theory development, is relatively low compared to other fields, which has implications for the practical and scientific impacts of design research. Here, we understand theory development broadly, building from initial results, through frameworks and conceptual models toward more fully realised theory. We are soliciting both full-length and abstract-only papers with suggested topics that include: understandings of theory and theory development, approaches to developing theory, reflections on adaption or elaboration of theory from other fields, considerations for theory-methodology fit, methodological guidance for building or testing theory using qualitative work, simulations, experiments, etc., and characterizations of the use of theory in design research.
