117714 - Cylindrical Spur Gear Tooth Root Stress Calculation Through Fe-Based Flexible Multibody Simulations
This work proposes a new approach to calculate cylindrical spur gears tooth root stress. The analysis is carried out through FE‑based flexible multibody simulations. They are performed on several meshing periods at a very low speed (quasi-static regime). Contact is formulated by an augmented Lagrangian and calculations are performed thanks to the preconditioned conjugate gradient method (PCG). No assumptions are made regarding the load distribution, tooth and gear blank flexibility, or possible premature contact. Before the calculation, the maximum root stress position is not predetermined as it could be in other works. Only one type of gear is considered here, which is composed of a driving pinion and a driven wheel for different microgeometries and applied torque. The model only needs two input data: pinion rotation and value of wheel output torque. This work investigates the tooth root stress evolution during successive meshes as well as the influence of nearby teeth or gear blank flexibility on it. The obtained results are compared to a theoretical load distribution and ISO standard maximum principal tooth root stress value. Accordingly, this paper aims to propose a new approach that could be used in the future as a complement of classical normative approaches, derived from semi-empirical studies, to better design gearing transmissions.

Presenting Author Biography: Valentin Mouton is a mechanical engineer. He received his master of science from Troyes University of Technology (Université de Technologie de Troyes). He is a research engineer at the LTDS (Laboratoire de Tribologie et Dynamique des Sytèmes) of the École Centrale de Lyon. His research interests include gear dynamics, gear stress analysis and multibody simulations of gearing transmissions.
